Inc. 387 Park Avenue South New York, NY 10016-8810 ISBN 0806981636 Price Hardcover: $27.95 (Canada $38.95 ) 128 pages, 50 in color When the book review offer was given and I read the title, I was under the assumption the book would be about the construction of furniture using 2x4 lumber. More or less along the lines of simple furniture, something for the lodge or cabin on the lake. What I received was a book of projects for the beginner woodworker. And a very good one at that. With a total of 23 projects to choose from, they start out from the very basic like the scrap wood candlesticks and wooden window valance, then progress to projects such as a coat rack constructed of prepurchased items or a footstool or a cedar keepsake box. Once the beginner has built their skills and more importantly, their confidence, they can proceed to some very nice projects like the grandmother clock (surprisingly easy) to the faux poster bed or the kitchen island topper and the wine cabinet. Any of these would make a welcome addition to your home. Nice projects and simple designs. Of course, any well written book for newbie woodworkers wouldn't be complete without the a series of chapters on materials, techniques, tools and most importantly, safety. The authors have done a very fine job of incorporating all of this into the book in a simple to read and easy to follow format. I also give top marks for the great color photos of the completed projects set in a proper background in a home enviroment. As well, complete instructions, tables and charts of materials lists, tools required for the tasks and a cutting list for each project. Two thumbs up!
