A Book Reviews by Gordy Gonyo Titles: Wood Carving Tools, Materials
and Equipment, Vol 2 ISBN 1-86108-202-9 In volume 1, Chris has written the most complete book on carving tools I have ever seen. This book describes in great detail the purpose of each tool, and how it it used. I was not aware of the vast amount of carving tools that are used, but if you pay close attention, you will learn how to sharpen each one. Mr. Pye starts at the grinding wheel and then goes to the honing stones. He also discusses alternative ways of sharpening. For actual application of each tool, Chris goes to great length to explain the process. There are also many good safety points in each chapter. If you are just starting to carve, this is the place to begin. Volume 2 gets more into power tools, bandsaw, router, scrollsaw and power carvers are all covered. There is still a lot about hand tools like hand routers, spokeshaves and scrapers. There also a great chapter on modifing your carving tools to better suite your needs. Benches and holding devices are discussed in a practical manner. The author then takes you into the make up of a tree. Sawing, drying, defects and the problems of wood movement and moisture content are all talked about. The second book continues with showing you how to draw up your project so you have a better direction of your goal. Lastly, is jointing, repairing and finishing. Not knowing everything about carving, I still think these books are a great investment. Gordy Gonyo.
