Inc. 387 Park Avenue South New York, NY 10016-8810 ISBN 0806965835 Price Softcover: $19.95 (Canada $29.95) "Projects to practice and inspire; Techniques to adapt to suit your own designs". This blurb on the cover just about sums up the book. The entire book is about basics, everything from the proper stance at the lathe to finishing techniques. The main text uses a split-page format, with 22 projects at the top and 22 techniques at the bottom. The projects vary in difficulty from a cord-pull to a hollow form vase from wet wood. Each project refers you to the proper techniques which range from chainsawing the lumber to the final finish. The split-page format allows you to refer to the proper technique while remaining on the project's page. The introduction consists of basic tool selection and wood identification to shop layout. This is kept to a bare minimum with most of the book dedicated to woodturning. The last few pages are a photo gallery of projects done by professonals, including the author. A real inspiration to keep practicing. The book is a real bargain for someone, such as myself, who is just beginning woodturning. It is well laid out, with photos of everything from the sharpening procedures to the intricate turning details. Even the experienced turner may learn something as I have yet to find anyone who has seen a cereal stirrer....project 8.
