I have a birdhouse and 2 feeders in the back yard and enjoy the peacefulness of watching them. Although I haven't tried building any of the houses yet, I know I will be building a few. This book is well written, Thomas Stender starts with tools and tips, tools needed, materials, relevant technology, and finishing.

Not all these houses need to be functionally used, as the author shows some examples as interior pieces for show. The author may use a tool, or piece of power equipment but doesn't urge one to go out and buy the tool or equipment, as he explains alternate methods using hand tools. He offers tips on the use of band saws, miter gauges, drilling and glass cutting. He also discusses the pros and cons of woods used in the construction, glues and safety.

The 15 projects are arranged from the easiest to the most challenging. He provides a Materials list, and a cut list, hardware and recommended finishes. Each house is of a different architectural design and Mr. Stender gives a brief description of the style where it's found and the history of the period. It is a well-written book, with step-by-step instructions with pictures, although he assumes one is familiar with woodworking. The book is straightforward, and can be used by the novice as well as a pro.

I for one will be looking forward to try some of his plans.
