As part of the 'Building Basics' series
of books, the reader is first given an overview of design principles
in the opening chapter, explaining not just where elements of
the kitchen are placed, but also why. In following chapters,
basic cabinet dimensions, kitchen shapes and layouts are thoughtfully
presented showing potential conflicts with door openings, traffic
flow, etc. The brief but informative section on accessible work
centers for wheelchair users offers practical information with
dimensions, etc. (After being a temporary
user following a nasty motorcycle accident a few years ago, I
know the value of this information.) The remaining chapters cover
basic electrical and plumbing requirements, appliances, countertop
and flooring materials.
I found this book to be well written
in a clear and concise manner with good illustrations and photos
complimenting the text. In some ways, it is a showcase for modern
cabinetry and fixtures, but the information on basic dimensions
and layouts balances this. Also, being faced with a kitchen remodel
myself this year, I will be using this book as a reference again
and again.
