Inc. 387 Park Avenue South New York, NY 10016-8810 ISBN 0806956038 Price Softcover: $14.95 (Canada $21.95 ) 128 color pages The only thing disappointing about this book was the title, I thought I was getting a book about how to make my own "great" windows and doors. Instead I was treated to an excellent how to book on how a beginning "do it yourselfer" can select and install his own. The book begins by taking you through the basics of window and door types and clearly explaining their anatomy. With this knowledge, you have a good foundation for the later chapters on installation and trim. The author even takes the time to explain what tools will be needed and what they are used for. He then launches into a very detailed step by step explanation of framing, removing old windows and doors, installing the new units, trim, weather-stripping, hardware, repairing broken glass, maintenance and repair. There are loads of pictures and diagrams and the text is very easy to understand. Each operation is broken down into numbered steps, divided clearly on the page with shaded backgrounds almost all of them include a photo or diagram of what you are supposed to be doing. I have done most of the operations that the author describes and can say that I even learned a few new things. For a person with absolutely no handyman experience, if they followed the steps outlined, they will have no problem installing there own windows and doors.
